Manila — Representative Zia Alonto Adiong from the 1st District of Lanao del Sur has voiced concerns regarding the potential harm to the country's territorial integrity and the significant moments in our history if the call for secession or separation of Mindanao continues.
"We must remember that our strength lies in our unity, in our ability to stand together against the challenges that we face. Our differences seem trivial when compared to the bond we share as a nation," says Adiong.
The lawmaker emphasizes that separation could lead to the destruction of culture, economy, and relationships. Adiong also highlights the potential impact on Mindanao's economy, as many projects in the region may not be feasible without the national government's assistance.
The congressman also expresses concerns that the progress made through the peace process may go to waste if the separation proceeds.
"It would also undermine the hard-won achievements of the peace process. Our people have dedicated their blood, sweat, and tears to acknowledge and rectify historical injustices. As the first signs of a lasting and just peace begin to emerge, we must nurture and foster them, instead of uprooting them. Moreover, history has shown us that secession often results in conflict and violence. The scars of division run deep, and the repercussions of such a move would be felt by generations to come," the lawmaker emphasizes.
Adiong urges continuous support for the development of Mindanao as an integral part of a stable and united republic.
