Senator Gatchalian Pushes for Amendments to SIM Registration Law to Counter Scams

Manila —Senator Sherwin Gatchalian aims to amend the Subscriber Identity Module Registration Law to enhance public protection against scammers.

Among the amendments proposed by Gatchalian are limiting the number of SIM cards allowed per user for registration and regulating SMS (short message service) marketing, promotional, political, or fundraising messages.

The senator emphasized that despite the SIM registration law, many registered SIM cards are still involved in various online scams, such as love and cryptocurrency fraud. Most of these cases were discovered during raids by authorities on Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGO) hubs.

This situation is one of the driving factors behind the lawmaker's plan to amend the SIM registration law.

Senator Gatchalian previously filed Senate Resolution 1054, which seeks to investigate the use of SIM cards in the illegal operations of POGOs. | Teddy Borja
