Surigao City —Two out of six fishermen from Surigao City who were reported missing since March 1 have been located in the waters of the Bohol Sea and Siquijor Province, rescued by the Philippine Coast Guard SAR Team.

The fishermen, identified as Joseph Mapalo and Jesmar Besing, along with their fellow crew members Juan Timothy Codillo, Julieben Edranan, Alan Solitario, and Marcelo Doblas Jr., set sail from Barangay Canlanipa, Surigao City at around 5:00 PM on February 28 bound for Limasawa Island.

Unfortunately, on the afternoon of February 29, while at sea near San Ricardo, Southern Leyte, their fishing boat was damaged by huge waves, leading to their vessel capsizing.

Before abandoning their sinking boat, the fishermen managed to communicate with their families using their mobile phones.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) was immediately alerted, prompting a response from the PCG SAR Team, together with various units including Coast Guard Station Surigao del Norte, Coast Guard Mobile Team Surigao City, Coast Guard Special Operations Group – Northeastern Mindanao, and Coast Guard Baywatch Patrol Unit – Northeastern CGS-SDN, along with personnel from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) in Surigao City.

Two of the missing fishermen, Joseph and Jesmar, were rescued on Sunday, March 3, in the vicinity of the Bohol Sea and Siquijor Province. They received immediate medical attention upon rescue.

CGS-SDN station commander Jerick Maglangit stated that the search operations would continue to locate the remaining four fishermen.
